Commentary – Are Video Games Getting Gayer?

Video games have grown up a lot in the last few years, “but we still haven’t seen the kind of normalization [of LGBT characters and story lines] that we’ve seen in movies and on TV for some time,” laments Brenda Brathwaite, a veteran game designer and the author of Sex in Video Games. “We still haven’t had our Brokeback Mountain moment.”

    I don’t know if they are getting gayer since I don’t play a ton of video games, but I know that Hank recently was playing Fable II and you had the option of making your character gay, which I thought was interesting.

    Yes! Fable II is one of the most gay-inclusive games that’s been released. And the funny thing is, they didn’t somehow create a “gay storyline,” they just allow players to make broad, open-ended choices. So players create their own “gay content” in the game, while straight players can create whatever experience they want. I think it’s great.
